Cotton is King!
Title
Cotton is King!
Subject
Southern Economy
Description
This cartoon was created just before the start of the Civil War, but it demonstrates the Confederate states’ economic ideology. The south believed that Great Britain and France would bow down to them because those nations would need cotton for their industry, and therefore would turn their backs on the north for fear of hurting their own economies. This cartoon shaped U.S. foreign relations with France and Great Britain through the message it sent to Southerners in support of their cause.
