Medieval Art

View Fullscreen

The term “medieval” is varied, engaging, and problematic. Most importantly for this project, it points to art that is geographically and culturally diverse. The time period for this project ranges from the end of Late Antiquity (around the fourth century of the Common Era) to approximately to the fifteenth century. The class examined works of art and architecture from the “East” (Byzantium and Islamic lands) and the “West” (Europe and the Mediterranean) within their cultural and historical contexts. Each point on the map links to a digital exhibit that represents the work of a student who has analyzed four objects or monuments to highlight a particular topic or theme in medieval art history.
