Metal Clothing Clasps

This exhibit will discuss and compare metal clothing clasps from the medieval era. Included in the exhibit are: a shoulder clasp from the Sutton Hoo burial site, a late roman brooch, a woman’s brooch found in Chessell Down, and a Frankish shoe buckle. The clasps will be compared in regards to the intricacies and creation process of each, as well as the decorative vs. utility aspects, in order to evaluate whether the objects’ respective cultures placed more value on the appearance or practicality of an object.
